Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled to take place nationwide from June 11 to June 18, 2025.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, Prof. Davis stated that GES, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has ensured that logistics and examination materials are adequately distributed to schools, as well as metropolitan and district education offices.
A total of 603,328 candidates comprising 306,078 females and 297,250 males are expected to sit for the exams. He detailed the exam schedule, saying, “Two subjects will be taken in a day, one in the morning at 0900 hours and one in the afternoon at 1300 hours.”
Prof. Davis also outlined the subject areas, noting, “In all, 11 subjects will be examined, and each candidate will take an average of nine subjects, including seven common core courses, which are English Language, Mathematics, Science, Ghanaian Language, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Art and Design, and Career Technology.”
Private candidates will take the exams at designated centres in Tema, Gambaga, and other regional capitals.
To safeguard the integrity of the exams, supervision will be jointly handled by GES, WAEC, and law enforcement agencies such as the Ghana Police Service. Prof. Davis warned officials against aiding malpractice, stating, “Invigilators and supervisors who are caught aiding examination malpractice will be severely punished, and this might cost them their jobs because we want good role models.”
He further urged students to rely on their preparation rather than illicit methods, saying, “Do not rely or depend on ‘appor’. We don’t want students to excel through cheating. That is not the quality and the kind of students Ghana needs.”
Prof. Davis commended head teachers, educators, and parents for supporting candidates in their preparations and encouraged students to put in their best efforts. I know they can make it if they apply themselves to their books and prepare very well for the exams. I wish all of them the best in their examinations.”
