More than 5,700 people have been severely affected by heavy flooding across 14 districts in the Central Region following consistent rainfall over a 10-day period, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Kwesi Dawood, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, described the damage caused by the torrential rains recorded between June 18 and June 27 as widespread and devastating. Many residents are in urgent need of support, with properties submerged and homes destroyed.
“The Central Region has experienced flood disasters in 14 of our districts, excluding Cape Coast Metropolis. Affected areas include Komenda, Assin South, Dunkwa-On-Offin, Upper Denkyira East, Mfantseman, Mankessim, Agona East, Agona West, Winneba, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, and East. Our staff members have conducted thorough assessments in these regions, and the findings have been submitted to the relevant authorities. We are currently awaiting a relief response for the affected communities,” Mr. Dawood told Citi FM on June 27.
He added that roughly 5,700 individuals have either been displaced or impacted by the flooding, with significant property destruction reported in many communities.
Meanwhile, Cape Coast is contending with a separate disaster after two buildings collapsed on the night of June 26 the sixth structural collapse in the area within a week. The latest incident occurred at Brofoyedur around 10 p.m., following a heavy downpour that further weakened the already vulnerable structure.
Fortunately, all occupants had already evacuated due to earlier flooding, and no injuries were recorded.
In response to these emergencies, NADMO is working closely with district authorities to mobilise assistance for affected residents. The agency is urging the public to stay alert and promptly report incidents as efforts continue to manage the aftermath of the floods and building collapses.
