The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has announced a renewal of the curfew hours in Walewale and its environs in the North East Region.
Acting on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council, the decision was made through an Executive Instrument. The curfew will be in effect from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, starting Monday, June 9, 2025.
In an official statement, the Ministry urged residents, including Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and Youth, to remain calm despite ongoing challenges. It encouraged them to adopt peaceful means in addressing their grievances and to work together to ensure stability in the region.
Additionally, the Ministry has imposed a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and any offensive weapons within Walewale and its surrounding areas. Security forces have been directed to enforce this directive, and individuals found in possession of weapons will face arrest and prosecution.
Tensions have been rising in Walewale following the curfew imposition. On Saturday night, some angry youth vandalized the vehicle of the North East Regional Minister, Tia Ibrahim, in protest.
The incident occurred after local chiefs and residents expressed their opposition to the curfew, which was first imposed on February 15.
The government continues to monitor the situation and urges all parties to prioritize peace and security in the region.
