The Ministry of Education has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of three students of Nkwanta Senior High School, a result of renewed tribal violence in the Nkwanta area of the Oti Region.
In a press release issued on June 27, the Ministry confirmed the fatal shooting of two female day students on Thursday, June 26, and the death of a male student who was hit by a stray bullet on Friday, June 27, 2025.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the fatal shooting of two female day students on Thursday, 26th June, and the loss of a male student who was struck by a stray bullet on Friday, 27th June, 2025,” the Ministry said in the statement on Friday.
“This is an unthinkable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and the entire school community during this painful time,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry extended its condolences to the affected families and reaffirmed its solidarity with both students and staff at Nkwanta SHS. “We stand with all those affected by these senseless acts of violence and assure them of our support during this difficult period.”
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu commended the swift action taken by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Acting Regional Director of Education in Oti Region. “We applaud the decision to temporarily close the school as a safety measure and to arrange police escorts to ensure the safe evacuation of students to their homes,” he said. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority.”
Mr. Iddrisu has tasked GES leadership with monitoring developments closely and working with local authorities to safeguard lives and school property.
The statement concluded with a call for peace and calm. “We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict so that students can return to a secure and supportive learning environment.”
