The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has formally declared his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer slot in the 2028 general elections.
In a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 18th June, Dr Adutwum revealed that he would present himself once the party officially opens nominations.
“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.
The former education minister, widely recognised for his contributions to Ghana’s education reforms, now joins a growing list of senior NPP figures expressing interest in leading the party into the next presidential contest.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Vice President under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is considered by many as a strong contender, having emerged victorious in the party’s 2023 flagbearership race.
Other notable personalities, including Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, are also expected to declare their intentions in due course.
Dr Adutwum’s announcement follows closely on the heels of the NPP’s official declaration that its presidential primary will take place on Saturday, 31st January 2026. This development paves the way for what promises to be a defining internal contest ahead of the 2028 general elections.
