President Mahama urges Police Council to uphold integrity and professionalism
President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly inaugurated Police Council to prioritise integrity and professionalism, stressing that the Ghana Police Service must be a beacon of integrity.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on June 10, the President acknowledged the challenges affecting the service and urged council members to take bold and impartial actions to restore trust.
“For too long, issues of politicisation, arbitrary promotions, disregard for seniority, unfair postings, and breaches of professional conduct have cast shadows over the credibility of the service. I am fully aware of the frustrations among the ranks of the Police Service and the general public,” he stated.
The President emphasised the need for reforms, highlighting how the morale of officers and the concerns of citizens must be addressed.
“The Ghana Police Service must be a beacon of integrity. Many of your officers feel sidelined and demoralised, and many citizens feel unheard and unprotected. These conditions are not sustainable in a just and democratic society,“ he added.
He urged the council to take swift and decisive action:
“Today, I charge this council to be bold and impartial, addressing these grievances swiftly and justly. Re-establish the trust within the service and between the service and citizens.“
The President concluded with a strong call for professionalism over political influence:
“Do not allow power to overshadow fairness. Let professionalism, not political pressure, guide your decisions,” he asserted.
The newly inaugurated council is expected to take steps to tackle the concerns raised and reinforce the credibility of the Ghana Police Service.
