The Minister of Communications, Sam George, has cautioned that telecommunications companies that fail to implement the newly announced changes in data packages will face sanctions.

He stated that starting July 1, 2025, data bundles will increase by 10% across various networks without a change in pricing. The measure is intended to improve service delivery while ensuring affordability for consumers.

At a media briefing in Accra on Tuesday, June 10, Sam George explained that the July 1 implementation date is to allow telecommunications providers time to recalibrate their systems in line with the agreed adjustments.

“I am aware these increases are going to come at considerable cost to the telecommunications companies. The implementation date of July 1 is to allow the networks to recalibrate and reconfigure their systems to reflect the agreed-upon values. The regulator, the NCA, will ensure they monitor strict implementation of this directive on the 1st of July. Where failure is applied, sanction is applied,” he stated.

The updated data bundle increments are as follows:

  • AirtelTigo Ghana – 10% increase on all data offerings
  • Telecel – 10% increase in all data bundles currently offered by the network
  • MTN – 15% increase in all data bundles currently offered by the network

Clarifying his authority on telecom pricing, the Minister noted that he cannot single-handedly mandate reductions in data costs.

“The Minister cannot unilaterally order telcos to reduce data prices,” he stated.

He reiterated his commitment to a collaborative approach in addressing telecom issues. “I’m committed to an engagement-led style of leadership. The recovery of eight years of mismanagement can’t be completed in four months.”

The Ministry has assured consumers that the NCA will closely monitor compliance from telecommunications providers to ensure the directive is strictly followed.
