Canadian multinational Rektron Group Inc. has announced plans to acquire a 60% majority stake in AT Ghana Limited, marking a strategic move into Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

The deal, subject to regulatory approval and due diligence, will be executed in collaboration with local telecom company Afritel Ghana Ltd.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 4, the Vancouver-based conglomerate described the acquisition as part of its broader strategy to diversify globally and strengthen its presence in emerging markets, particularly Africa.

“We are excited to take a significant stake in AT Ghana and appreciate the support of the Government of Ghana as we take a significant stake in AT Ghana. This aligns with our global vision to advance major infrastructure initiatives, foster innovation, and deliver value to consumers throughout the region,” said Atanas Kolarov, CEO of Rektron.

AT Ghana, formerly known as AirtelTigo, serves over 2.3 million customers and has operated under full government control since its nationalization in 2021.

Rektron is partnering with Afritel Ghana, led by telecom industry veteran Nana Richmond Aggrey, co-founder of Scancom Ghana (now MTN).

The alliance is expected to merge international investment with local expertise to drive innovation in the sector.

“This partnership marks a major milestone in our mission to advance telecommunication services in Ghana. Through our strategic collaboration with Rektron, bringing global best practices, strategic investment, and next-generation infrastructure, we will strengthen our mobile network, expand nationwide coverage, and modernize service delivery,” Aggrey stated.

Rektron further confirmed that government backing for the transaction was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on May 21, 2025.

The company highlighted Ghana’s increasing demand for digital solutions as a key factor in its decision, but stressed that finalization of the deal remains contingent on obtaining regulatory clearance.
