The Minority Caucus in Parliament, on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, staged a walk from Parliament to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
Their protest was in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) prolonged inability to collate and declare results for the 2024 Ablekuma North parliamentary elections.
The Minority Caucus formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), demanding the provision of maximum security to enable the EC to successfully complete the collation and declaration process.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor-Dompreh, while reading out the petition, stated, “On behalf of the Members of the Minority Caucus of Parliament, I write to formally petition your office over the continuous failure to provide adequate security required by the EC in order to collate and declare the parliamentary results of the Ablekuma North election following the 2024 general elections.”
In an unexpected show of unity, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, joined the Minority Caucus in their march to the CID Headquarters to submit the petition.
The Ablekuma North Constituency remains without a parliamentary representative following the contentious 2024 general elections.
Despite multiple efforts by the EC to conclude the collation process, widespread confusion and clashes have hindered progress. As a result, the EC has requested the assistance of the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security for the final stages of the process.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has accused the NPP of deliberately avoiding a re-run of the disputed results.
Dr. Tanko-Computer, reinforcing the NDC’s stance, declared, “We (NDC) want a re-run for the 62 polling stations, but the NPP is running away. They’re insisting on declaring the results with their fake scanned copies and we won’t accept it.”
